Pemetaan Sektor Unggulan sebagai Upaya Pengembangan Ekonomi Regional Kota Medan

Abstract
This study aimed to map the leading sectors in Medan City as an effort to develop regional economy. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed using the Location Quotient (LQ) method based on constant price GRDP data of Medan City and North Sumatra Province from 2020 to 2024. The findings revealed that out of 17 business fields, 12 were basic sectors with LQ > 1, dominated by tertiary sectors, and four were leading sectors with very high specialization levels (LQ > 2), namely Business Activities, Other Services, Real Estate, and Financial Activities. Another finding indicated that the manufacturing sector was classified as non-basic (LQ 0.44), and a declining trend in LQ values was observed in several basic sectors, suggesting the emergence of new growth centers outside Medan City. The limitation of this study lies in the use of secondary data without further analysis such as Shift Share or Klassen Typology. The implications suggest that local government should prioritize the development of these four leading sectors through improving digital infrastructure, easing investment regulations, and strengthening regional connectivity. The originality of this study lies in the use of the most recent data (2020-2024) and the application of LQ > 2 criteria to identify leading sectors more selectively in Medan City.
